How is it possible for Google map to have street view?

This is amazing I’m in awe over this. But how is it possible for Google to take thousands of miles of photos right at street level?

They send specially equipped vehicles with cameras mounted on top to record the street views of thousands upon thousands of miles of streets throughout the U.S.
I just saw a story recently on it with a picture of one of the vehicles. If I can find the link, I’ll post it below. If not, search around for “Google Street View” and you can probably come up with it.
